Caregivers are often overwhelmed when making elder care decisions for their senior loved one because these decisions are often life-changing plus the choices are usually very expensive. Hence, it not only wise, but also practical to develop a financial plan as early as possible for the future caregiving needs of seniors in the family. Family members, for instance, can start making decisions on how to sell a house or whether to secure a long term care insurance or not.

Knowing and understanding all your needs and resources are important prior to making some major financial decisions. Such financial decisions should not only be based on one’s current condition, rather it should include their future situation. Otherwise, such a decision, based on limited factors, might bring about damaging side effects to you and to your family. Likewise, when making this decision, bear in mind that the needs and resources of every senior and caregiver is different and unique to his/her own particular situation.

In addition, financial planning should not be limited to your senior loved ones. As a senior caregiver, you should also plan for your own future needs. Most caregivers are fast approaching or even beyond the age of 60, and so their capacity to deliver care for another person, perhaps even including financial help, may hang on doing some adjustments to their own financial strategy.

The following information must be included in a financial plan: A monthly budget that specifies the income and expenses to clearly show your expected cash flow. An assessment of your health insurance plan detailing everything that it covers. An evaluation of all your properties and liabilities so that you can clearly see your net worth. The name of a specific person on whom you designate your finances and decision-making should the time come that you become unable.

Speaking with a professional financial planner, a geriatric care specialist or an elder-law attorney might be the best way to start thinking about these complicated financial and legal issues. You can look for such providers from your local Aging Service Access Point (ASAP). This can give you some helpful advice as well as referrals to some expert financial planners.

When developing your financial plan or arranging a talk with a financial planner, the very first thing you should do for yourself or the elder under your care is to analyze your cash flow. The way to do it is to calculate current income and expenditures, which includes insurance payments. You also need to compute your total net worth by taking away the total amount of your debts from the present value of all your properties. For this, you should know the current value, at least of your major assets such as your house. To begin with this process, you must be able to locate all your financial and legal records and papers.

After evaluating your financial resources, the next thing you should do is to approximate the senior care that would be much needed in the future. Of course, this estimation cannot be exact, because it is difficult to know the type of care that would be needed and the expenses that would be incurred. To determine whether an elder is qualified for free services or for those with income based fees, some caregivers do a quick benefits checkup online. This online service is usually free and confidential. It gives a comprehensive list of benefits and available programs for seniors (those who are 55 years old and beyond) from the federal and state government, as well as from some local and public institutions. There are elders and caregivers who are not qualified for subsidized elder care services, but whose budget is so constricted that they cannot afford senior care services out of their own pocket. Most resort to selling their house (usually their largest asset) in order to cover all the senior care expenses. However, this is something many are unwilling to do. Some families resort to a reverse mortgage, which is a special type of home loan that allows a homeowner to exchange a portion of his home’s equity into cash. But unlike the more common home equity loan, you will not be asked to repay it until you no longer use your house as your main residence.

If the senior under your care is 65 years old or above, he qualifies for Medicare. This is the federal health insurance program that provides health care benefits to senior citizens as well as some younger people who are disabled or those with permanent kidney problems who needs either a dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Without the proper skills and training to perform the duty of a caregiver, most people find it tough and challenging to render proper senior care to their parents. Good thing there are professional senior caregivers who can guide you so that you can give the best elder care possible. Often, they can visit your home and assess the specific needs of your senior and make a plan, which is a detailed instruction of the daily care that you need to do.

However, caring for an aging parent can be overwhelming when you have other things to do such as earning a living or running your own household. This is most especially true when you have your own kids to look after whether at home or at school. Hiring a senior caregiver is not only necessary but also advisable in your case. Otherwise, you will be too exhausted to care for anyone in the long run.

There’s a lot of work involved in providing in home elder care and it requires constant evaluation of the needs of your aging loved one. Most people opt to provide medical care to their elderly parents right at their home because this way they can closely monitor their health conditions and they are assured that they’re parents are given nothing less than quality service.

Most elderly parents need only some basic care services such as personal hygiene, light housekeeping, helping with some physical exercises, cooking meals, bathing and dressing, transporting him to appointments, or simply to keep him company.

Employing the right senior caregiver is something that requires much thought. You and your parent should agree on which company or person to contact to provide the services that they need. One of the best things to do is to look for a reputable company that carefully screens the caregivers they refer.

When talking to home care companies, you should take your time to know as much as you can about the services they can and cannot provide. It would be beneficial to you and to your parent as well to ask questions such as how long they have been in the business, whether or not they do a background check or a drug check among their workers, or whether or not they have any case of elder abuse.

You shouldn’t hesitate to ask any such question because there are few things more important than making sure your aging parents receive the highest quality elder care possible. When you have finally chosen the right senior caregiver for your parent, you should show them around the house. Point to them where cleaning and other supplies are.

You should encourage them to ask whatever questions they may have. Do the same with your parents. It is most important that everybody feels at ease in this first meeting. Lastly, remember to leave your contact information to the senior caregiver so they know how to get a hold of you in the case of an emergency.

Grown children often live many miles away from their aging parents. Young people need to go where the jobs are, and these days that often means moving out of state, away from family and friends. Parents often enjoy traveling to visit their grown children who have moved out of state and enjoy busy schedules with their own families and their work.

As the parents begin to age, they frequently are unable to travel and most of the communication is by telephone. However, many of today’s seniors grew up without a telephone and learned to think of the telephone only as a devise for sharing short bits of information. Many children feel like a three to five minute conversion is not adequate to keep the lines of communication open with their aging parents. Many find it difficult to enjoy a visit by telephone and worry about the cost of a long-distance call. If the parents become hard of hearing, it is even more challenging to have a satisfactory communication. And the quality of these communications is further compromised if the parents begin to suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Today, with the use of a computer equipped with a camera, a microphone and high speed internet access, video conferencing is possible. For those families that are separated by many miles, videoconferencing is a great way to stay connected and have face to face visits without traveling. Video calls using Skype, which are completely free to users, are probably the most widely used videoconferencing system. There are many advantages to the elderly in using Skype videoconferencing in place of tradition telephone calls. First, they get to see the person they’re talking with. Seeing the family member’s home, children, pets, etc. is an added bonus. Family members can group by the telephone, and even the youngest child and the family pet can join the conversation. This is a perfect example of the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Seeing the expression on a family members face when they tell you, and sometimes show you, how much they enjoy the gift you sent is priceless. For the hard of hearing, the video picture aids greatly in comprehension. And best of all, the basic service provided by Skype is free to the users.

One word of caution; using a computer is often confusing and frustrating to senior citizens. Many seniors today are more comfortable with using computers now, but as they age, they may find that they no longer have the patience to use the computer. Fortunately, caregivers and family members can help out.

Those involved in health care and services to the elderly are beginning to recognize the value of Skype and make it available to the elderly. Videoconferencing can help keep seniors connected to the world of family and friends when they are no longer able to travel and get out as they once did. High speed internet access of being made available by many assisted living facilities and some are providing computers that are equipped with camera and microphone. Health care workers and my volunteers are working with seniors to help them enjoy these calls with family members. This is most certainly a worth checking out and will bring joy to the face of a senior who can now fully enjoy a videoconferencing visit with family and friends.

With the number of elderly persons growing each year, issues dealing with aged care have become even more important. If you are the caretaker for an older person, you will eventually probably have to make some difficult decisions about his or her care. You have several available options.

It is always important to keep the persons dignity and independence in mind. When possible, allow the person to help with the decision making process. Try to find a solution that allows the person to keep as high a level of independence as is possible. You must carefully assess his or her own individual needs before making a decision.

You need to carefully examine their needs to decide if they are capable of staying in their own home, or if they need to be placed in a facility. Their mental and physical abilities are a big factor in the final decision. Only then can you make an adequate determination.

Observing issues like personal hygiene practices, eating habits, medications, and mental and/or physical n capabilities must all be examined. If there is a dramatic change in eating habits, or a notable change in their hygiene practices, you may have reason for concern. Also if they have a problem with neglecting to take their needed medications or take them in wrong doses, this should be a matter of concern. If falling or other physical problems have started, a type of facility might be in order.

The facility you choose should be based on the elderly persons needs. If they can maintain their independence, but do not need to be left alone during the day, you might consider placing them in an adult day care. They will not be alone, and they will have interesting activities to keep them busy and entertained.

If they need some care, but can still get around their home fairly easily, home health care might be the best choice. You can hire workers to come to the home to help with the care. This can be from someone staying during the day only, to having someone there with them on a 24 hour a day basis. The person may or may not be medically trained. You may also have medical personnel who come by and check on the elderly person several times a week.

If their mental or physical abilities have become more limited, a facility outside of the home may be in order. You can choose between an assisted living facility or a nursing home. The care in each is very similar. However, there is sometimes a little more independence in assisted living. Also with assisted living, they are cared for 24/7, but they may not have the ready access to medical personnel that is available through a nursing home.

It is difficult when having to make decisions about aged care. As the caregiver, you must decide what is best not only for your loved one, but also for yourself. There are viable options available.

Senior care in Thornton, is the largest elder protection referral service in the US providing all-inclusive resources, related to housing, for elders. It also facilitates elder supervision options to seniors and families in need. They provide elders and families with assistance and one-on-one guidance during this challenging period in life.

Choosing elder supervision for loved ones is an individual choice and an involved one. There are knowledgeable Eldercare Advisors for helping seniors along with their families in deciding regarding the elder protection choices available. Available options consider nursing homes, assisted living communities, respite care, Alzheimer’s care, retirement communities, residential support homes, hospice care, and home vigilance. Families are not charged for this personalized service, as the company is compensated by a large number of US’s vigilance communities.

Among the included choices, are most of the assisted residential communities, that help in encouraging safety, health and well-being among the older inhabitants who dwell there. Assisted living was developed as a strategy for seniors to supply them with housing, tending of health and provisions for personal management. Seniors that need assistance in their daily activities are given a better self-directed environment as compared to a regular nursing home.

The communities have a huge variance in the nature of management which they provide. Some might excel in providing a safe and generous surroundings for seniors that may be mainly self-reliant, only requiring minor timely assistance with some actions of daily life akin to medication management.

It is often awkward to persuade seniors that belong to this group that the aid of an proficient assisted living facility could be healthful for them. Mostly, it is obliging to realize many of the unnecessary fears that preclude elders from advancing to such a step. It is better to know more about the financing aspects of these installations. For that, a spreadsheet of cost analysis is provided. This might help in working out if the facility costs are more than or less compared to home based living.

Some community services have been designed specially for the very infirm elderly who require help and attention regularly. These facilities function as secondary to nursing homes. Often they provide several of the watchful services that is provided by a skilled nursing home.

It is essential to know what character of environment such elder supervision referral services such as senior care in Thornton, provide so that your adored ones will be comfortable most. They provide guidelines to help one decide, which would likely be best for your adored one: an aided living or a proficient nursing home.

As people get older, their mobility is affected. They have a harder time keeping their balance and moving about. This is especially true in the bathroom. More than 370 people are hurt in shower and bathtub injuries each day in the US. Many of them are seniors. They have difficulties getting in and out of the bathtub. As people age, they may have trouble raising their feet high enough during entry and exit. They may have a hard time taking a shower without slipping and falling. The Center for Disease Control reports more than 2 million people in the age group of 65 and older are injured in slip-and-falls in the home annually. Here are 5 ways to increase senior safety in the bathtub, shower and bathroom.

Flooring
A wet floor is hazardous to nearly anyone, but especially senior citizens. Consider installing carpeting with a short pile to prevent slipping. A bathmat towel made of terrycloth is also effective at sopping up moisture and splashes on the bathroom floor. Make sure it is smooth and flat to avoid tripping hazards.

Water
Bath water should be between 90 and 100 degrees F. Anything hotter can cause serious burns. Have a home health care professional or adult family member check the water temperature before seniors get in.

Slippery Surfaces
Bath and shower surfaces are slippery when wet. Stylish decals in a variety of colors and motifs create a non-skid area to prevent slip-and fall injuries. They stick to the surface with adhesive. When the old ones peel off or chip after years of use, it is time to replace them. A rubber bathmat for inside the tub covers a larger area and may provide more protection.

Shower Chairs
For those that are not steady on their feet, a shower chair prevents falls. It should be a chair specially made for showers; waterproof, with non-skid feet and sturdy construction. In-home eldercare professionals or personal physicians can make recommendations for specific types and styles. A practical companion to the shower chair is the hand-held showerhead. This makes it easier to bathe without losing balance. For those who have had recent surgery, it lessens the chances of getting the dressing or cast wet. For those that are too unsteady to bathe alone, in-home nursing professionals are skilled at using this special equipment and can help patients feel clean and fresh with proper hygiene.

Railings
Seniors often mistake towel railings for hand railings and grab bars. Towel racks are not sturdy enough to prevent accidents and may rip out of the wall. A professional should install railings and grab bars for safety throughout the bathroom. They are especially helpful in steadying balance while climbing in and out of the tub.

Older adults are especially vulnerable to accidents in the bathtub and shower. Many people do not consider the dangers of showers and bathtubs until there is an incident or a near-miss. When patients are recovering from an injury or surgery, doctors frequently recommend adding special safety features in the home to avoid falls and further injury. Senior care providers helping those that need assistance bathing or walking may also suggest special bathroom safety features as well.

Grab Bars
Grab bars are specially constructed bars usually made of stainless steel that are mounted on the wall for those unsteady on their feet. The bars can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal. They should be professionally installed so that they will not pull out of the mounting when grasped. While towel racks are available in most bathrooms, they are not a substitute for safety bars. They are not built to support at person’s weight and can come free from the wall if used as a grab bar.

Transfer Seats
Transfer seats and benches are used to help people get in and out of the bathtub. This is especially useful for people with difficulty sitting down in the tub. One type of transfer seat is mounted on either side of the bathtub and stretches across the middle. Another type resembles a bench seat and extends out on one side. In either case, the patient can transfer from a standing position or wheelchair and slide across the bench. This makes it possible to still take a bath and enjoy regular hygiene. Having a family member or in-home eldercare professional helping with transfer and bathing activities may be recommended by the patient’s doctor.

Shower Chair
When standing for long periods of time is difficult without someone losing their balance, shower chairs offer stability and safety. The chair’s legs should feature non-skid tips. Using an old folding chair or lawn chair is not advisable, as they are not sturdy enough and may slide or scratch the shower surface. Shower chairs are waterproof and may also have extra holes or slats in the seat for drainage.

Hand-Held Showerhead
A hand-held showerhead is practical for seniors using a shower chair or bench seat. It helps to prevent incidents while reaching to move the nozzle or leaning over to feel the stream of water. It makes showering or bathing possible for those who have mobility and balance problems and would likely require a sponge bath in bed instead.

Curtains and Doors
Install watertight doors to limit splashes onto the bathroom floor. Changing to a sliding door or adding weather stripping to an existing model will prevent leaks. For open showers and bathtubs, use curtains with weights on the bottom. This will prevent the curtain from blowing open and allowing water to leak out onto the floor.

At any given time, nearly 44 million Americans act as unpaid caregivers to an elderly or a disabled person. An astounding 59% of this population are employed and provide care in addition to managing their jobs. This population is easily susceptible to emotional and physical stress. Martin County in-home care centers are indeed a boon to primary caregivers who help seniors manage their daily activities with the least stress involved.

Recent studies have indicated that an increase in the use of home health care is sure to save the government billions of dollars in hospital costs. Caregivers at a professional managed Martin County Elder care center help seniors manage their daily activities like cooking, housekeeping, laundry, maintaining personal hygiene, and even eating. You could also seek assistance in activities like shopping, errands, communicating, transportation and even companionship service. The level of assistance provided by these in-home care agencies largely depends on the level of assistance required by the senior.

A few senior care centers provide free Martin County assisted living placement services where seniors are given a choice of the most appropriate assisted living facility or a Martin County Alzheimers care center.

If youre parent is worried that hiring a caregiver would mean compromising on their independence, you could hire the caregiver to help your parent with household chores rather than hands-on daily activities. Tasks like yard cleaning, bed-linen changing, handling monthly utility bills, vacuuming are often overwhelming for a senior and a caregiver who assists the senior is these activities is welcome.

These professionally trained caregivers often provide the much needed respite for primary caregivers. Locating an in-home care agency isnt difficult. You could consult your local church or community centers for help. You could also speak to your local Area Agency on Aging to learn more about home health care services for seniors. An eldercare specialist is also a great person to seek help. Eldercare specialists help seniors by assessing their needs vis-a vis their medical and emotional condition and suggest the right services. You could also speak to your parents physician, who is in a better position to suggest home health care services best suited for your parent.

A majority of the costs involved in home health care is to be borne out of private funds, however Medicare and Medicaid and other private insurance companies cover some of the costs of home health care. The cost usually depends on the type of services used. Needless to say, non-medical care is less expensive than the services of a skilled medical help.

Whether you are a concerned family member or a caregiver, Ready Hands is ready to help with your eldercare Virginia. As the only physician-owned and managed organization in the Virginia area, Ready Hands provides the high quality care, service and resources you expect from an eldercare provider.

Virginia state law mandates that any organization that offers “hands-on” assistance with personal care (bathing, dressing, toileting assistance, etc.) must be licensed as a home care organization. Ready Hands is one of the few eldercare organizations in Virginia that has been licensed by the Virginia Department of Health to provide such services. Obtaining this license means that Ready Hands has indeed met the strict requirements and mandates of Virginia law and is in full compliance with the extensive regulations and biennial inspections designed to protect patients and their families.

Founded in 2002 by Dr. Granger Benson, Ready Hands and Dr. Benson are dedicated to providing the best eldercare service of its kind in Virginia. Youll find them located in Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William County, Stafford County, parts of Loudoun County and Fredericksburg. Dr. Benson himself often conducts the initial assessment of a client. Further, he takes the time to familiarize himself with the needs of each individual client. Dr. Bensons high level of involvement ensures that the staff of Ready Hands receives the guidance they need to safely help their clients who are living with chronic illness or disability.

THE READY HANDS DIFFERENCE

What distinguishes Ready Hands from other eldercare providers in Virginia is the quality of their staff. Instead of hiring independent contractors, Ready Hands hires only direct employees. This ensures that their performance is monitored and supervised according to Ready Hands means and methods to meet your expectations.

CAREGIVERS NEED HELP TOO

Ready Hands understands that those who provide eldercare to loved ones can be overwhelmed. In fact, it is these individuals who are most likely to enlist Ready Hands assistance. To provide the peace of mind you desire, Ready Hands provides access to a manager 24 hour a day and maintains frequent communication with you. They are very flexible about adjusting to changing needs and schedules. And they fully realize that a caregiver needs a break from time-to-time to attend to personal needs and priorities.

Ready Hands offers a variety of affordable services in eldercare Virginia and all areas where they operate. These services include: assistance with various personal care tasks and household chores, companionship and recreation, meal planning/preparation, even live-in services.
